Veto Expected for Repricing Bill! Act Now

For three sessions now, HGEA has pushed for a bill that would allow public sector unions to proceed to arbitration when it comes to repricing salaries for job classifications. The bill passed this session and it’s currently on the governor’s desk.

If made law, HGEA will be given a fair opportunity to target specific job classes where salaries aren’t competitive with the private sector, positions with high vacancy rates, or both.

But this bill is in trouble. Gov. Green announced his intention to veto.

We need to act fast — vetoes are due July 10, but it could happen earlier. Will you write or call the governor’s office and ask him to reconsider his veto?

The process is simple:

Step 1

Visit the governor’s contact page and fill out the form with your name and contact information.

Step 2

Personalize the following message based on your own experience as a government employee:

Aloha Gov. Green,

It has come to my attention that you intend to veto a vital bill that would help the state address its growing vacancy crisis and make public service jobs competitive with the private sector.

I’m writing to ask that you reconsider your veto of House Bill 1640 related to repricing.

I’m a [insert position title] with [insert department]. The state’s staffing shortage means many of us are doing the work of two or three people. This has led to severe reductions in services that our community relies on.

The requests by our union to reprice job classes to keep salaries competitive with the private sector continually fall on deaf ears. The current repricing process includes no way for our representatives to appeal declines by the Department of Human Resources Development, even though wages in most instances are not on par with the market and industry standards.

If the state is serious about solving the severe vacancy crisis, then it needs to start with making the repricing process fair. Please consider letting House Bill 1640 become law.

Across state and county government, HGEA members are doing more with less. With upwards of 40 percent of positions unfilled in some departments, our members are putting in heroic efforts to keep Hawaii running. “Hawaii Works Best When We Do” is HGEA’s new awareness campaign in response to the worsening vacancy crisis.

The benefits and pay of government jobs were once seen as competitive. Not anymore. Benefit packages in the private sector have caught up. This is why we included a call to action to state and county officials. It’s time that wages and benefits reflect the essential work of our public employees.

Royal Hawaiian Band Enlivens Kamehameha Day Celebrations

The Royal Hawaiian Band played a prominent role in the annual Kamehameha Day celebrations. Mahalo to the band for continuing this legacy and bringing joy to the community with each performance. They’re the oldest and only full-time municipal band in the U.S.

A $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to two students who graduated from a high school in the state of Hawaii and plan to pursue post-high school study on a full-time basis at a university, college, community college, vocational or trade school. Enrollment in the fall 2024 semester is required to be eligible.

All applications must be received or postmarked by Friday, July 12.
