Bill amended to keep shortage differentials as part of retirement calculations

February 06, 2021

Earlier this week Senate Bill 1082 relating to the Employees' Retirement System was heard in the Senate Labor Committee. HGEA opposed one specific part of the bill that was seeking to amend the definition of base pay for retirement benefits.

The bill is attempting to standardize what would be classified as base pay for retirement calculations. HGEA made sure the committee understood that deleting shortage differential pay from base pay would be very damaging and unfair to our members.

Due to our advocacy, the bill was amended to KEEP shortage differentials as part of base pay for retirement calculations.

Thank you to Senate Labor Chair Brian Taniguchi and the committee for supporting the amendment!
