HGEA Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update Monday, March 16

March 16, 2020

During this time of rapidly changing conditions, it is important to be informed of factual information from reliable sources. Follow Centers for Disease Control and Hawaii Department of Health protocols for social distancing, hand washing and staying home when ill. Be vigilant but remain calm.

It is apparent that each employer jurisdiction (State, Judiciary, HHSC, DOE, UH and each county) is developing separate policies/protocols as a response to COVID-19. There is no uniformity in what the employers are doing at this time. HGEA is in the process of meeting with each jurisdiction and will inform members of how that jurisdiction is addressing the pandemic as we meet and obtain information. That information will be posted on the HGEA website, coronavirus section.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION EXTENDS SPRING BREAK THROUGH MARCH 27

Members have been asking about school closures. The DOE has extended Spring Break for the students through March 27. As of our meeting with the DOE today, Monday, March 16, employees are expected to report to work on Monday, March 23. Updates will be posted to the HGEA website, you should also check the DOE website for the latest information and updates.

HGEA MEETINGS AND EVENTS

HGEA is following the Centers for Disease Control recommendations for social distancing and for avoiding large gatherings. We encourage the cancellation or postponement of all HGEA group meetings, recreational activities and events through April 2020.

UNION AGENT VISITS

Union Agents will continue serving members and will be available for meetings. However, when possible, business will be conducted by phone or videoconferencing.

TELEWORK

As of now, we know that some departments and jurisdictions are researching ways that employees can work remotely. For some positions this will be possible however for others it is not practical. Check with your supervisor or Human Resources Officer for your department's protocols at this time.

HGEA GENERAL ASSEMBLY

HGEA is considering postponing or rescheduling the 25th Biennial General Assembly currently scheduled for May 14 -16 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on Hawaii Island. At this time, the hotel is holding to its cancellation policy that would charge HGEA a very expensive fee -- which is unacceptable. HGEA will continue to monitor the pandemic situation and work with the hotel on rescheduling this event if necessary. We expect to have a decision within a week.
