March 6: COVID-19 update
March 06, 2020
As of March 6, 2020, at about 3 p.m., Governor David Ige announced the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the State of Hawaii. A male Oahu resident had traveled on the cruise ship Grand Princess and disembarked in Mexico. He then traveled back to the islands by plane before exhibiting symptoms. The governor says this is not a case of community spread, that the male became infected on the trip, fell ill after getting home then sought medical care on Oahu. The Grand Princess was in Hawaii and made stops on Kauai, Feb. 26; on Oahu Feb. 27; in Lahaina, Maui on Feb. 28; and Hilo, Hawaii on Feb. 29. The DOH, working with the Centers for Disease Control, is tracking potential contacts. Currently the Grand Princess is anchored off shore of San Fransisco as passengers and crew are tested. So far 21 people on the ship, including 19 crew and 2 passengers, have tested positive. To view the press conference go to Hawaii Department of Health Facebook page.
