DOE Furlough Plan was NOT shared with HGEA

December 15, 2020

As rumors regarding Gov. David Ige's plan to unilaterally implement furloughs continue, we learned that yesterday (December 14, 2020) a memo was sent to all Department of Education employees falsely stating "The Department's furlough implementation plans were shared with the Hawaii State Board of Education, Hawaii Government Employees Association, Hawaii State Teachers Association, and the United Public Workers, in a good faith effort to mitigate the impact on all employees."

HGEA, UPW and HSTA had no prior knowledge of the DOE's announced School Year 2020-2021 Furlough Plan.

Similar to the unilateral furlough plan Ige announced last week for employees in the state executive branch, the DOE's unilaterally imposed plan was not shared with the affected unions prior to being distributed to employees.

Please look out for future eBulletins — we will continue to keep you informed as we face the prospect of furloughs and layoffs.
