Legislative Update: May 2, 2019

May 02, 2019

As the regular Legislative Session of 2019 comes to a close today, we’re pleased to report that several of HGEA’s priority bills passed the Senate and House unanimously. Every bill that passes final reading including S.B. 1192, which contains the EUTF appropriation for all HGEA units, H.B. 845, which requires employee orientation for new hires and S.B. 1498, which requires the Hawaii Labor Relations Board to determine qualifications for grievance arbitrators will be enrolled to the Governor for his consideration. Governor Ige then has the option to do one of the following:
1. Sign the bill into law
2. Allow the bill to become law without signature
3. Veto the bill, whereby the Legislature must override his veto with 2/3 of both the House and the Senate.

Our success this year could not have been done without the support of key legislators, Chairs Aaron Johanson, Sylvia Luke, Brian Taniguchi and Donovan Dela Cruz, and Speaker Scott Saiki and President Ronald Kouchi.
