Attacks on Working People - U.S. Supreme Court Rules on Janus Case

June 27, 2018

Supreme Court Rules Against Working Families

In a politically motivated ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court sided with corporate CEOs and billionaires as they ruled in a 5-4 decision in favor of Janus in the Janus v AFSCME case today. This ruling makes right-to-work (for less) the law of the land. Soon after the ruling President Trump tweeted, "Big loss for the coffers of the Democrats!" which just confirms that this is truly a political power play.

Organizations such as the Freedom Foundation and billionaires such as the Koch brothers are trying to divide and weaken our membership and our power to advocate for working families.

We will not give up the fight. This only makes us more determined to stand strong in unity with our HGEA and other union families. The purpose of unions is to advocate for workers to have fair wages, fair treatment and safe workplaces, and to collectively negotiate on your behalf.

Many members are asking what can I do? First, make sure you are signed up as a member, talk to your co-workers about the many benefits of membership, welcome them into our union family and make sure new and non-members are signed up. Get involved, become a workplace steward and come to a Unit meeting.
