May 1 was National Principals’ Day! We would like to mahalo all principals for their leadership and dedication to the next generation of scholars.

Keoni Wilhelm, Unit 6 member, decided to return to H.P. Baldwin High School after graduating and completing a summer teaching session. His love for giving back to his community and helping students fulfill their dreams is what keeps him motivated. Mahalo for all you do, Keoni!

May 3 was National School Lunch Heroes’ Day! We would like to mahalo all school lunch professionals for their selfless dedication to ensure the health and nutrition of our students.

Jason Schwerdtfeger, Unit 2 member, was inspired by his father to go into the culinary arts. He had a passion for teaching and helping the community, which motivated him to combine his two interests for his career as a school food services manager. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jason organized weekly food deliveries for more than 70 students. Mahalo for all you do, Jason!

Big legislative wins

The union is stronger today than we were at the start of the 2024 legislative session after lawmakers passed several pro-labor bills and we successfully fought back against others that would have eroded worker rights. Here’s a quick rundown of our successes this session.

Major Wins

Repricing Bill — Allows public sector unions to proceed to arbitration if the union and employer comes to an impasse over repricing job classifications
New Employees Bill — Allows the exclusive representative to file a complaint with the Hawaii Labor Relations Board if the employer fails to conduct a new employee orientation
HLRB Confirmation — The senate confirmed Stacy Moniz as labor representative on the Hawaii Labor Relations Board

Bad Bills We Defeated

Worker Rights — More than a dozen bills that would have exempted employees from civil service and/or excluded employees from collective bargaining
AI Doing Our Jobs — A bill that would have allowed artificial intelligence to supplement four essential government services
Privatization — A bill to privatize a small boat harbor
Telework — A bill that would have established a telework monitoring system for state employees; and a bill that would have limited the number of days a state employee can telework to two days a week

You can make a difference this election by helping HGEA get candidates elected who represent our union values. As a political action volunteer, you’ll be making an active contribution to protecting your job, benefits, retirement and ultimately your family’s future.

In an effort to address the City and County of Honolulu’s challenges in recruiting and retaining engineers, Mayor Rick Blangiardi’s administration has proposed a supplemental agreement to increase compensation for Unit 13 employees in the city’s engineering classes. Ratification for this agreement will start on Friday, May 3 and close at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 6.

Under the proposed supplemental agreement, effective July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025, the following would apply to affected employees:

Placement on a new temporary salary schedule at their respective salary range and step. Base salaries will be a minimum of 10% higher than what they would receive with the current salary schedule that would go in effect on July 1, 2024. This increase is in addition to the 3.59% across the board increase in the July 1, 2024 salary schedule. The city is also proposing higher salary increases at the SR24 level and above to address retention issues.
Continuation of applicable step movements as they become eligible according to Unit 13 step movement plan (except following an equity adjustment).
Continuation of shortage differentials for eligible employees.
Possible approval of equity adjustments if a new engineer within a job class covered by this agreement is hired above the minimum step in the same department, division, and section, and is in the same job class and position with similar duties/responsibilities.

While the duration of this supplemental agreement cannot extend past the expiration of the current Unit 13 contract on June 30, 2025, the city’s intent is to work towards a more permanent solution to compensate city engineers appropriately.

HGEA recommends that you vote “Yes” to approve this supplemental agreement

Voting starts on Friday, May 3 and will remain open until 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 6.
On May 3, an electronic ratification ballot will be sent to your personal email address from “HGEA Ballot,” with the subject, “BALLOT: HGEA – City BU13 Engineer Compensation Supplemental Agreement Ratification.”
If you do not see a ballot email in your personal inbox on May 3, check your Junk Mail or Spam folder. See instructions on how to request a ballot. Requests for ballots must be received by 2:30 p.m. on May 6 (no later than two hours before the close of electronic voting).

Results of the ratification votes will be reported on Tuesday, May 7.
