In a recent Civil Beat article, Mayor Mitch Roth claimed our endorsement of his opponent, Dr. Kimo Alameda, is about him not caving into our “demands” for hazard pay.

WTF? We’re here to set the record straight. Rather than uphold his side of the contract for employees who risked health and safety during the pandemic, his administration is stalling, offering unfair settlements and playing legal games.

Roth said, “At the end of the day, you know, I love these workers.” We call BS. If he actually cared, he’d get serious about tackling the severe vacancy crisis in county government that has left the workforce feeling burned out and like the mayor doesn’t care about them.

Even if you’re a Hawaii-island member not employed by the county, this matters for you too. We’re all in this together. We can’t let routine violations of our contracts become the norm among the employers.

Huge victory! Gov. Green signed our repricing bill!

Wow! A week ago we asked you to flood Gov. Josh Green’s office with messages in support of our repricing bill, which he had threatened to veto. And yesterday he signed it.

In the words of Joe Biden when he was vice president, “This is a big f*cking deal.”

The union now has a powerful tool to target specific job classes where salaries aren’t competitive and push for better pay. In the past, requests by the union to reprice job classes would continually fall on deaf ears. The previous repricing process included no way for us to appeal rejections by the Department of Human Resources Development, even though wages in most instances were not on par with the market and industry standards.

Not anymore. This new law gives us an avenue to appeal those unfair decisions and get you the pay you deserve.

For three sessions we’ve pushed for this. Today, it’s a reality, and our union is now stronger than ever. We couldn’t have done it without you.

2024 Primary Election: Our Endorsed Candidates Announced!

In observance of Independence Day, HGEA offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4.

After a rigorous vetting process, the HGEA board of directors approved the full slate of primary election endorsements. This list is comprised of candidates who share our union’s values. Electing labor-friendly lawmakers means better laws and quality of life for Hawaii’s working families, so please consider voting for these candidates when you cast your ballot.

Ballots will be mailed to you around July 23. Be sure to mail yours back early, and encourage your friends and family to do the same.

Tamayo Perry Celebration of Life

Sunday, July 14 at 3 p.m.

Ehukai Beach Park

On June 23, Tamayo Perry, water safety officer with Honolulu City & County, was attacked by a shark and passed away. For those who would like to honor his memory, please join his friends and family at this celebration of life. Donations are welcomed.

Perry was a well-known and respected lifeguard serving Oahu’s North Shore since 2016. HGEA extends our heartfelt condolences to Perry’s loved ones.

The state Department of Education is embarking on an organizational alignment initiative, beginning with state offices, to restructure the department in accordance with its implementation plan of the Board of Education’s Strategic Plan.

They have provided HGEA with information regarding the alignment initiative for the purpose of consultation. We ask that you review the material and share your feedback.

DOE will gather employee suggestions through their own internal portal, however, we are gathering feedback to share on your behalf.

RELEASE: HGEA Endorses Dr. Kimo Alameda For Hawaii County Mayor

The Big Island deserves a leader who respects public employees.

With county departments facing severe staffing shortages and an overworked and demoralized workforce, the board of directors of the Hawaii Government Employees Association is endorsing Dr. Kimo Alameda in the Hawaii County mayor’s race. This was a unanimous decision, based on Alameda’s demonstrated leadership as an advocate for community health and for working families. The board is confident Alameda will be a mayor who stands with civil servant employees in providing critical services to the public.

During his time as a leader in the administrations of Mayors Billy Kenoi and Harry Kim, Dr. Alameda worked closely with leaders in various departments, including police, fire, housing, and transportation and he will be ready to go to work on day one.

The Big Island deserves a leader who respects the rights of public employees and treats them fairly — someone with a history of aloha for all, a trait Dr. Alameda demonstrated while serving as the CEO of the Bay Clinic Health Center and leading the Hawaii Island Fentanyl Task Force to address a community health crisis that has touched nearly every family in the county.

It’s time for the Big Island to get the mayor it deserves. That’s why we’re urging our members to vote for Dr. Kimo Alameda.

Current active employees of state executive branch departments (not including HHSC, Judiciary, University of Hawaii, Public Charter Schools and DOE) are already beginning to fill out their eligibility forms in the state’s HIP system. We’ve received a number of questions from excluded employees with the state executive branch. Here’s what you need to know:

Am I eligible for THP?

If you were an excluded employee who worked during the pandemic (from March 4, 2020 to March 24, 2022) in the state executive branch, you’re entitled to temporary hazard pay under our settlement with Gov. Green.

Will I receive the form to attest to my days worked during the pandemic?

Yes, you should be given access to the online form through the HIP system. You should confirm this with your department designee.

What if I have questions about the form or the process?

This is the state’s form, not HGEA’s. If you have any questions regarding eligibility and the payout process, contact your department designee.

When is the form due?

The deadline to complete and submit the form is July 31.

Any future updates will be posted to our settlement information page for members who left service.
