Welcome to the Next Wave!
Are you in the “35 and under” crowd? Know someone in the union that is? Get ready...the Next Wave is here!
Next Wave is an exciting program established by AFSCME, our national affiliate union, for “35 years old and under” union members.
- OUR FUTURE The future of our organization depends upon our ability to identify and activate new young
member leaders to fill the gap when seasoned activists move on.
- YOUR UNION Many young union members may not know the history in which many contract benefits have
been gained. Through Next Wave, we can introduce our young members to the value and role of HGEA.
- NEW CHALLENGES Today, we are confronted with another challenge - more than half of our union
members are eligible to retire in the next 10 years. The Next Wave program is important in providing the tools and
connections to get younger members active and ready for future union leadership.
- REFRESH Sometimes, regular meetings aren’t the best point of entry into our union for a younger member.
Next Wave hosts fun, purposeful events to draw young people in and get them excited about HGEA and AFSCME. They
emerge prepared to enter our union energized and inspired to be active participants.
- MOBILIZE 6.5 million young people voted in the 2008 primary election. Our 35 and under constituency is
important and should be mobilized and organized!

The Haumana Project
The Haumana Project is a new initiative developed by the Next Wave committee to make sure that our
current leaders transfer the valuable lessons and knowledge that they have acquired to the emerging
generation of upcoming leaders. The Haumana Project pairs mentors with Next Wave members and fosters
relationships for growth and leadership development. If you’re a new or young Union member wondering
how you can get more involved with your Union, the Haumana Project is just what you’re looking for!
Or if you’re a seasoned Union member who has actively participated and is interested in making sure
that the future of your Union is good hands, join us as a mentor!
