HGEA supports AFL-CIO boycott of HTH Corporation's Pacific Beach and Pagoda Hotels
[Back to List]
On February 15, 2008, the American Federation of Labor and
Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) announced a
boycott of HTH Corporation's Pacific Beach Hotel and Pagoda
Hotel & Restaurant to its 10.5 million members across the
country.
"HTH Corporation has made a mark for itself as one of the worst
employers in the country," stated AFL-CIO President, John
Sweeney. "They have violated federal labor law repeatedly and
on a massive scale. They have treated their workers with utter
disrespect. They have shown contempt for the law, for their
employees and for the community."
The AFL-CIO boycott was in response to years of resistance by
HTH Corporation to allow workers at the Pacific Beach Hotel to
organize a union in affiliation with the International
Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU). It ended with the hotel
illegally cutting off negotiations on Dec 1, 2007 and over 30
employees being laid off.
As a result, "Justice at the Beach" was formed - a coalition of
community groups, educators, lawmakers, churches and unions,
including the Hawaii Government Employees Association
(HGEA).
Hawaii State AFL-CIO President and HGEA Executive Director,
Randy Perreira is urging all 43,000 HGEA members to respect the
boycott and refrain from patronizing both the Pacific Beach
Hotel and the Pagoda Hotel services and facilities.
"Pacific Beach has a history of violating workers' rights going
back to 2002," said Perreira, "and they're at it again with the
mass firing and other shameful violations of workers' legal
rights."
Please help us support our fellow union members by boycotting
HTH Corporation's Pacific Beach and Pagoda Hotels!
